DESIGN PROJECTS

Single acorn light standards will be installed on two major sidestreets along El Cajon Boulevard. There will be 17 on Euclid Ave and 8 will be added to 35th St. This project has been designed, but construction funding was reporogrammed by the City of San Diego. The Association is searching for additional funding.

The Texas to 30th project was the final piece of a project spanning almost 20 years, occurring over the watch of four different mayors and four different City Councilmembers. The cost per block for the first segment in the 1980s was under $100K, while the final per block cost on the most recent project was closer to $140K

Timeline:

  • June 2006: Construction of the Boulevard Transit Plaza is completed. The new plazas will eventually become a major hub, servicing the proposed Metro Flyer bus rapid transit service along the Boulevard that will connect San Diego State University and downtown via the Boulevard. Also in the works is a bus rapid transit project along Route 15 that will link up the northern communities with downtown, passing through the transit plazas. That project is anticipated by SANDAG to be complete in about five years, with the east/west Metro Flyer coming online sooner than that.
September 2005: Construction delays due to arch structure redesign. The arches were found to be unstable the way they were originally designed. Temporary braces have been intsalled while a permenant fix is sought.
  • December 2005: The supporting structure for the arches have been installed.

  • October 2005: A model of a possible solution to stabilize the arche straucture has been supplied by the project's design team.
  • August 2005: Arches and shade structures were installed.
  • Construction began in September 2004, and was expected to be completed mid-2005.

  • After several years of planning, a citizens advisory committee approved the final design for improvements on both bridge decks over the Route 15 freeway at El Cajon Boulevard and University Avenue. The Boulevard deck providea a shelter and kiosk, and will also have ornamental and artistic features including night lighting and see-through panels along the freeway edge to reduce noise. Additional components like location maps, decorative tile and other art will be added when funding is identified.

The final section of the Boulevard median between Texas and 30th is now complete. This marks not only the finish to this segment but also the completion of the entire median enhancement effort between Park and Fairmount. This final piece includes the reconstruction of left turn pockets, reinstallation of the ornamental lighting, and introduction of tree planting and ground cover.

The project study area included the north and south side of El Cajon Boulevard between 44th and 54th. The purpose of the project was to assess the feasibility of improving the existing deficiencies and the associated construction costs.

To fill the void of lost neon signage, the spectacular Boulevard gateway sign was erected in 1989 to return to the glory of neon. City officials and local business leaders saw the sign as a major new landmark which would promote the Boulevard as a destination and encourage further community revitalization efforts. The sign was designed and built by Graphic Solutions for a cost of $200,000. Click here for more about the sign.
