Chicken Pie Shop

In 1990, the Chicken Pie Shop was spotlighted in The Boulevard newsletter, welcoming this longstanding restaurant to the district. With 25 million pies sold at that point, it was hopeful that they would sell millions more on the Boulevard. Now in 2007, just one year before the restaurant's 70th anniversary, their customers are still eating between 800 and 1200 chicken pies every day.

Starting in 1938, George Whitehead made chicken pies his business and he did it well. In the 1950's there weren't many options to eat out at an affordable price. At the Chicken Pie Shop, the ingredients are hand made, the turnover is quick and nothing goes bad. They recently began donating their grease to New Leaf (newleafbiofuel.com), a local organization that converts grease into an alternative fuel for cars. When everything is made from scratch and simple ingredients are used, costs are low and that is what people have always enjoyed about this restaurant. As the manager states, "One of the best things about this place is that we don't change; we just are who we are."
