El Borrego- Authentic Southern Mexican Cuisine
While San Diego already offered a myriad of Mexican restaurants, Rosario Sotelo and Rodnia Navarro realized that there is a lack of authenticity in the typical menu and set out to do something entirely different.
The restaurant specializes in Lamb Barbacoa, which is not to be confused with the American Barbeque. One of the most delicious dishes of the authentic Southern Mexican tradition, Barbacoa was originally cooked overnight with coals in a pit dug in the ground, but is now prepared by slowly steaming lamb with Maguey leaves, which give it a distinctive and wonderful flavor. The dish is served with warm hand-made corn tortillas.
The restaurant looks very welcoming. Warm traditional colors give it a happy, warm and light air. The rough wooden furniture evokes the style of the South of Mexico, and the stainless steel spotless kitchen, open to the view, adds a touch of modernity without clashing. But what is most appealing is the delightful smell drifting in the air and the openness and enthusiasm of Rosario and Rodnia.
There are plans to add a patio in the back of the restaurant, hopefully before the summer, to allow customers to relax in a little oasis decorated with lush plants. This restaurant is a jewel that awaits discovery.
