Since 1938, the Chicken Pie Shop has been serving up 800 to 1200 pies daily. As the manager states, "One of the best things about this place is that we don't change; we just are who we are." (Click to read the spotlight)

Utility Box Art Spotlight:

As you can imagine, the chicken has always been the long standing mascot of The Chicken Pie Shop and chicken decorations donated by customers adorn the restaurant. Following this ritual, the El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement Association (BIA) hired artist Kelly Hutchinson, owner of a local gallery Fish Out of Water, who wanted to paint three stunning chickens on a utility box right in front of the restaurant. With nearly 70 years in business, the El Cajon Boulevard BIA is trilled to contribute a few more chickens to the historic legacy of the Chicken Pie Shop.

Event Information:

The El Cajon Boulevard BIA is interested in presenting pieces of history and culture which highlight the evolution of this historic roadway. To kick things off, in June 2007, the organization recruited eight artists to paint ten utility boxes. Three months later, the organization is celebrating the artist's contributions by featuring the utility box art gallery at the Lafayette Hotel, September 15 and 16 for the second annual University Heights Arts Open.

To preview the work along the Boulevard, begin at the Boulevard Gateway on the corner of Park Boulevard and El Cajon Boulevard. Well-known muralist, Mario Torero painted a box that identifies with the nostalgic toy train shop, Frank the Train Man. Further down, in front on the Chicken Pie Shop, artist Kelly Hutchison, owner of the gallery Fish Out of Water, painted a set of prominent chickens which signify the importance of this historic restaurant. The art continues down the Boulevard, focusing on the highlights of its' cultural past. For future Boulevard Art District updates, visit: theboulevard.org.
